Explorer Young Leaders (Ages 14–18)

The Young Leaders’ Scheme is a fantastic opportunity for Explorer Scouts to step up, give back, and grow their leadership skills.

Young Leaders are Explorers who volunteer with Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs or Scouts. They support the adult leaders to run meetings, lead games and activities, and help younger members achieve their best. It’s a key part of Scouting — and a brilliant way to develop confidence, communication, and teamwork.

What do Young Leaders do?

  • Lead games, badge activities, and reflections
  • Help plan and run weekly section meetings
  • Support camps, events, and District days
  • Build real-world skills and experience
  • Work towards the Young Leaders’ Award, including a series of 11 training modules and 4 practical missions

Many Young Leaders also count this role towards their DofE Volunteering, Chief Scout Awards, or King’s Scout Award.

Training and Support

All Explorer Young Leaders have access to structured training through the Young Leaders’ Scheme, supported by our District. This includes:

  • Regular training sessions run by our District team
  • Opportunities to reflect and review with mentors
  • A clear path through modules and missions
  • Support from your hosting section’s adult leadership team

You don’t need to have been a Scout before — just enthusiasm, reliability, and a willingness to get involved.

Ready to get started?

If you’re an Explorer and want to become a Young Leader, you’re already helping with a section and want to make it official — or you’re not involved in Scouting but want to volunteer your time — we’d love to hear from you.
